Leon GOP State Committeeman and RPOF Treasurer Jeff Howell represented the conservative viewpoint this past Sunday at a Temple Israel interfaith panel discussion on refugees and immigration.

At the discussion, Jeff speaks up for common sense: “Liberalism does not hold a monopoly over compassion and caring, there are thoughtful conservatives throughout this country and throughout this world,” Howell says.  “Secondarily I’d like to say it’s alright to question your elected officials about national security and about vetting and about what’s going on with respect to the immigration that is coming over.”

“It doesn’t mean you’re a bigot, it doesn’t mean you’re a racist it doesn’t mean you’re a xenophobe.”

Four weeks from today, the 2012 Republican National Convention will kick off in Tampa Bay. It will officially launch Mitt Romney’s campaign for President of the United States. In less than 100 days, the General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 6th, and America will choose between continuing to fundamentally transform our nation and restoring American greatness.

After August 14th, we have a great task ahead. In this time of choosing, we need to connect with other voters and make the case for Republican candidates. State and local GOP leadership needs to drive this participation. As State Committeeman, I’ve worked hard to get as many Republican voters involved as possible. The decisions made on and before August 14th will resonate on November 6th. That’s why I’m asking for your support in re-electing me Leon County Republican State Committeeman.

If you are a business owner, you may have thought that your hard work, discipline, creativity, drive, and skill built that business. According to President Obama, you, your hard work, your intelligence – none of those things are ultimately responsible for the existence of your business. Someone helped you or you lucked out, but you can’t claim credit for what you have.

Paul Ryan nailed it when he said of this unguarded Obama moment that “[e]very now and then, President Obama pierces the veil. He’s usually pretty coy about his ideology, but he lets the veil slip from time to time.” The President does not believe in the individual or celebrating success or the efficacy of entrepreneurialism. He believes in the collective and government as the arbiter of who gets what.

We do indeed have a transformational president. A president, who when he speaks “off-teleprompter”, expresses beliefs that are antithetical to the American Dream. A president deeply offended by the American character. We have a president who wishes to transform our nation from one where government is beholden to the people into on where the people are beholden to government.

Last week the majority decision on Obamacare shocked us all. While some pundits have tried to cast the majority decision as a long term win for conservatives, the reality is that we now have one shot to eliminate this disastrous legislation. Stephen Moore, the chief economist for the Wall Street Journal, has said that those making less than $120,000 a year would be funding 75% of the costs of Obamacare. Prevailing in the November Elections is the only way to rid ourselves of this obstruction to liberty and prosperity.

Conventional wisdom amongst conservatives is that President Obama will return to civilian life this coming January. We have no guarantee. We have to work hard to get Mitt Romney elected. Not only will we need to vote out the president who signed the so-called Affordable Care Act into law, but we will have to end the Democratic majority in the Senate that voted for it. This must be Bill Nelson’s last term in the Senate.

Chief Justice John Roberts raised the stakes of this election. The Chief Justice ruled that it is constitutional for “little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol” to “plan our lives for us.” This election will decide whether we preserve for future generations “this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.”
